Blue jays are interesting birds that I’ve been bypassing until lately. Since I’ve had more time to observe the wildlife in my yard, I’ve noticed a couple of different things about them I hadn’t before. I didn’t know they could mimic a hawk call. Here I thought there was a hawk flying through and one day I saw the blue jay making the call. I never really realized how quiet they could be either. Usually you notice a blue jay when it’s screaming about something. But they make all kinds of little creaks and squeaks or just fly noiselessly through the yard, usually at a pretty good speed. Sometimes it doesn’t seem as if there are any around, but let a crow or a hawk or a snake get nearby, all of a sudden there are 20 of them mobbing the intruder, shrieking.
